Japan: Tama the Cat Super Station Master

During Golden Week we went to Wakayama City, I had 4 want-to-dos on my list:

– Visit Tama the Cat Station Master and ride the Tama train
– Go to Kimii-dera Temple
– See the Castle
– Go to the beach

It took some time to get going and an hour or so to get to Wakayama so we didn’t arrive until about 13:30. First we changed trains at Wakayama station for the electric railway.

The train that came was the Omocha train, the toy train.

We rode it to the end of the line which took 30mins to Kishi. We’d already found out online that Tama was taking a day off, and that his deputy Nitama would be working!

NITAMA!

Poor thing was sat in a glass box as people lined up to take his picture, he seemed pretty relaxed about it all though. His station master hat was sat in the box next to him – completely covered in cat hair!

The station is completely covered in Tama decor, including a clock, posters, signs etc..

I tried on a station masters uniform!

And drank some local craft beer from Shirahama in the Tama themed cafe.

Inside the cafe there is a display of the history of the railway and Tama, including Tamas super uniform.

Halfway through my drink I noticed a life sized Tama outside!

Eee so cute!

So we did get to meet Tama afterall!

Before leaving we visited the gift shop and I got this amazingly crazy Nitama file, and a Tama badge for J.

Sadly we found out the Tama cat train wasn’t running at all that day, so just took a regular train back to Wakayama station. From there we took another train to Kimii-dera and visited the temple.

It had a nice view of the city and the sea from the top! Then we went to Wakayama Castle.

By then it was getting a bit late and the sun had pretty much set, so decided to leave the beach trip for another time, and just grabbed some food before going home.
